Located in the Western Portugal, it is one of the most well preserved and fascinating medieval villages in Portugal. Situated in a high point, close to the Atlantic coast, it is of strategic importance to the territory. Its occupation is prior to the arrival of Romans to the Iberian Peninsula, and it became wealthier from the moment it was adopted by the royal family and king D. Dinis offered it to his wife, D. Isabel, in the thirteenth century. It ended up belonging to the queens' home, which progressively valued and enriched, namely through the construction of several churches.
In Óbidos, inside its walls, you can find plenty of points of interest to be visited, namely a very well preserved castle and a group of houses of that time with powered windows, in a labyrinth of streets which lead us through Manueline porticos and small lakes.
Did you know that the Óbidos Lagoon has once gone into the Óbidos Castle?! This lagoon system is the longest in the Portuguese coast, currently with an approximated area of 6.9km2, and it's located between two municipalities - Caldas da Rainha and Óbidos. As a coastal lagoon system, the Óbidos Lagoon has a very high value due to its production characteristics, especially ecosystem biodiversity, fauna and flora, but also the avifauna, where can be seen migratory movements from several species - mostly flamingos.
